The body is nourished through work, breath, food
The mind through breath, inquiry, silence
Music is the very breath of life
The work done in asana practice is in the tradition of T. Krishnamacharya and T.K.V. Desikachar, wherein gentle, all body work is done and the movements of the body are totally aligned with the breath. This alignment returns the physiological functioning of the body back to its organic, harmonious rhythms. As a result, the person is deeply relaxed and various conditions such as high blood pressure, insomnia, irregular menstrual cycles and poor immunity are well addressed. Not surprisingly, this also has a very positive influence on mental states such as anxiety and depression.
With the body and its functioning attended to, the next part of the practice is pranayama, the conscious regulation of the breath. In Yoga, it is understood that the breath is the link to the mind.
The chosen method of meditation is the chanting of the Vedas. Sound fills space and the chants fill the mind-space, driving out every other thought. The sounds of these ancient mantras reverberate through every atom in the body and kindle the memory of their primal source. Once the chanting stops, the mind-space is now naturally filled with the silence that follows. This silence provides the experience of stillness, peace, and tranquility.

To have the mind grapple with the concepts expounded in the Yoga Sutra, Bhagavat Gita and Upanisads, engages the intellect. To hold these concepts in one’s mind and examine them intellectually is to engage in a meditation at the level of the buddhi. The individual then recognizes the operation of the ideas expounded, in the play of their own life.
The five tanmatras are the most subtle manifestations from which the materiality of the Universe evolves. Sabda, sound, is the first of the tanmatras to come into being. Through music, which is sabda, one can establish a connection to a deep, subtle, and joyous place within oneself.
The seven notes on which all music is based are said to be of divine origin. The first of the seven notes is ‘Sa’ and the fifth note is ‘Pa’. They represent Siva and Sakti, the source and the energy of the source. The remaining five notes are said to be born of these two eternal and unchanging notes. They are combined creatively in numerous ways resulting in numerous delights; just as prakriti, all nature, which is constantly changing, is a constant source of wonder and delight.
